DIP Update III

Boring day.. everyone’s out but me.

Ok, so let’s see.. the project’s gone into a standstill over the past 2 days. Things aren't progressing as fast as the initial 10 days. It’s now the time when more and more pieces come together and that’s where the problems start surfacing. The signals aren’t looking as good, the gain isn’t as high and we’re getting extra harmonics that shouldn’t be there.. maybe there’s a gremlin inside the thing.. hmm..

So anyway, last week, we celebrated Lionel’s and Hong Sheng’s birthday.. quite cool. One on Friday, the other on Monday. Went to celebrate lionel’s at pizza hut on friday.. it’s been quite a while since I last went there, and plus there was some student’s price thing, so it’s quite welcoming.. and on Monday, we celebrated hongsheng’s one at the lab..

LEFT: PIZZA!!!
RIGHT: That's the whole gang, waiting for lionel.. think army-styled resounding songs as we sung him a birthday song.. heh

LEFT: Birthday Boy Lionel with his cake
RIGHT: Birthday Boy Hong Sheng with his cake

Had some time after fixing and hooking up the circuits, and since our prof (aptly nicknamed 'Handsome' by all of us) didn’t want us to run through the big test without him around, I managed to get some interesting pictures.. =) once again, a big Thank-You to those who chipped in and got me my lovely camera.. I love it!

Thought it was quite an accomplishment getting the screen capture of the scope.. helps with the report too =) oh and the blue thing's our solar panel (+ some photoshop makeup)..

Finally got a chance to take this perspective picture and just when i clicked, kenny strolled in.. haha.. actually, it probably looks better with him inside the picture..

Oh and yes, before I forget.. heh. Ben, I’m still waiting for you to fix my snake.. =P

I'm still waiting.. ...

DIP Update II

It’s mid-way through the DIP term. Things are sorta falling into place. Did I mention that I was doing the hardware section for the project? So anyway, the pieces are finally coming together and the testings have produced very favourable results. That’s good. Considering it’s such a major scale thing that’s going on involving 20 ppl.. it’s so big with so many parts, that as long as one part gets stuck, the whole project will be jeopardized. So until it’s finished, you’d never know when Murphy will pop by.. Just found out too that my prof will be leaving NTU for Australia right after this proj term. Going to lecture at another university there.. quite sad. But that would probably be a good move for him.. one can probably guess that I’m not too pro-NTU.. heh.

Didn’t get to run much this week, unlike last week, so that meant that I had more time to myself.. lionel told me about this website crunchyroll.com. You’re able to watch A LOT A LOT of movies/dramas/anime from there.. it’s really quite amazing. The only flipside, well. It’s only mandarin. So don’t expect anything like RoboCop or Pirates of the Caribbean.. Instead, you’d find stuff like Curse of the Golden Flower, The Eye and even the newer movies like Protégé (good stuff!). I spent last night watching Stephen Chow’s Fight Back to School.. (逃学威龙) really really funny. Haha.. it’s in Cantonese (with my limited Cantonese vocab, I’m thankful for the subtitles!). Well, the screen’s kinda small but it’s really ok. You can even click the enlarge button to get it bigger, with insignificant loss of quality.. And unlike YouTube, the clips are not limited to 10 minute clips which take FOREVER to stream.. most of the movies on crunchyroll come in only 2 different clips.. good opportunity to get a toilet break too! I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to find mandarin/Korean/Japanese movies or wants to catch up on their dramas/animes.. boo to MOBTV, yay to crunchyroll.

Managed to fix up Eugene’s Fuzz Face pedal too.. it’s like rotting in my cupboard.. with all the tests/exams I hardly had the time to get down to fixing it up. I only managed to complete the tremolo that he passed me.. so today, I’m happy that I managed to get the Fuzz Face working. And thanks to Kenny who graciously lent me his guitar to test it on.. it sounds really good.. the fuzz effect is really strong. It’s probably the germanium transistors.. normal silicon ones don’t sound so good.. more ‘plastic’.. so anyway, if you’re interested to build your own fuzz face, check out this site for the schematic and component list etc etc.. Eugene probably bought the components and printed circuit board from this site, but really.. you don’t need to. The circuit’s really simple, and the components are easily available from Sim Lim. Implementing them on a vero-board (stripboard) will work just as well too.. and it will probably save you quite a few bucks..

DIP Update

Ok, so I got more details from my proj. We’ll be doing some Solar Powered stuff.. quite cool. Apparently, well you see, the solar panel doesn’t really generate a very high amount of voltage. What’s cool is that we’ll be using a Z-Source VSI to boost the voltage. Quite cool.. I never knew something like this could be done.. even as an engineering student, I never really comprehended how with just letsay 5V, you can generate anything more than 5V from it.. perhaps that’s why I never really understood how the camera flash works.. a camera probably runs on about 2 AA batteries, that’s no more than 3V, but yet the flash somehow manages to charge up an enormous amount of charge to give that blinding flash.. hmm.. amazing.. so well, even though this project isn’t exactly the most exciting or more interesting, nor will I be doing anything cool.. I guess there’s always something to learn from it. There’s also probably a good reason why I’m in it.. just have to figure that part out..

so anyway.. that’s what I’ll be doing. Some solar panel thing.. I guess I won’t give too much details here.. contact me if you’re interested. It’s only been 2 days, but I’m dead beat. Totally not used to this 8-hour workshift thing.. and I’ve got a month more.. woohoo.

I’m gonna play again this week for the Mother’s Day Weekend! This time for david.. it’s been quite a while since the last time, and also cos I missed the WEW thing cos of the exam. So I’m happy to be able to get back into it.. oh and I think I like Stronger Than by United Live quite abit.. click the link to listen to it..

Oh, and beeps sent me this email about Cookie Monster. I think it’s really interesting.. it makes u think much about what goes on behind the sesame street characters and will probably make u see Cookie Monster in a different light the next time u see him.. =)

Cookie Monster Searches Deep Within Himself and Asks: Is Me Really Monster?

- By Andy F. Bryan.

Me know. Me have problem.

Me love cookies. Me tend to get out of control when me see cookies. Me know it not natural to react so strongly to cookies, but me have weakness. Me know me do wrong. Me know it isn't normal. Me see disapproving looks. Me see stares. Me hurt inside.

When me get back to apartment, after cookie binge, me can't stand looking in mirror—fur
matted with chocolate-chip smears and infested with crumbs. Me try but me never able to wash all of them out. Me don't think me is monster. Me just furry blue person who love cookies too much. Me no ask for it. Me just born that way.

Me was thinking and me just don't get it. Why is me a monster? No one else called monster on Sesame Street. Well, no one who isn't really monster. Two-Headed Monster have two heads, so he real monster. Herry Monster strong and look angry, so he probably real monster, too. But is me really monster? Me thinks me have serious problem. Me thinks me addicted. But since when it acceptable to call addict monster? It affliction. It disease. It burden. But does it make me monster? How can they be so callous? Me know there something wrong with me, but who in Sesame Street doesn't suffer from mental disease or psychological disorder? They don't call the vampire with math fetish monster, and me pretty sure he undead and drinks blood. No one calls Grover monster, despite frequent delusional episodes and obsessive-compulsive tendencies. And the obnoxious red Grover— oh, what his name?—Elmo! Yes, Elmo live all day in imaginary world and no one call him monster. No, they think he cute. And Big Bird! Don't get me started on Big Bird! He unnaturally gigantic talking canary! How is that not monster? Snuffleupagus not supposed to exist—woolly mammoths extinct. His very existence monstrous. Me least like monster. Me maybe have unhealthy obsession, but me no monster.

No. Me wrong. Me too hard on self. Me no have unhealthy obsession. Me love cookies, but it no hurt anyone. Me just enthusiast. Everyone has something they like most, something they get excited about. Why not me? Me perfectly normal. Me like cookies. So what? Cookies delicious. Cookies do not make one monster. Everyone loves cookies. Me no monster. Me OK guy. Me OK guy who eat cookies.

Who me kidding? Me know me never actually eat cookies. Me only crumble cookies in mouth, but me no swallow. Me can't swallow. Me no have no esophagus. Me no have no trachea. Me only have black fabric throat. Me not supposed to be able to even talk.

Me no eat cookies.
Me destroy cookies.
Me crush cookies.
Me mutilate cookies.
Me make it so no one get cookies.
Everyone right. Me really is cookie monster.

Design & Innovation Project

This week will begin a new term after the exams. Well, it’s not exactly a Special Term/Semester.. those are balloted and I didn’t exactly get what I wanted. It’s some compulsory thing they call Design and Innovation Project (DIP). To me, it is in short, nothing more than cheap-labour.

So they throw a bunch of students together, about 20 of us and let us work on some ‘innovative’ project during the semester break.. come up with some brilliant new thing/product/device, which has to be impressive (since I’d pretty much bet that our grades would depend on it).. and out of the so many that gets churned out by the whole co-hord, there’s bound to be some pretty outstanding ones which will prob end up as property of NTU. Hah.. that’s cheap labour for you.. NTU-styled.

So anyway, this will be just a start of a looong 4-week term, let’s hope it starts out well tmr morning..

Oh and it’s May! Happy belated MayDay everyone.. and that also means, a new quote for the month! Hah.

This month quote is on Elitism.. Interestingly, I ran a search and came up with an interesting article regarding the Wee Shu Min case that happened not too long ago.. for the uninformed, she’s the Raffle’s girl who happily left the comment to “get out of my elite uncaring face”.. which obviously led to some major nuclear-styled fallout with the online community and press.. this site has a quick and dirty overview on the whole incident.. do take a look, it’s quite ridiculous actually.

Well, let’s just hope I’m not opening a can of worms here..

Mugged

"mug". 2 definitions for it.. one is to dig your nose into them books like what I’ve been doing for the past 3 weeks.. thank God it’s over. The other well.. read on..

*ahem*

Welcome to Krabi, Southern Thailand. The province lies some 800 km south of the Thai capital, Bangkok, and is a myriad of caves, waterfalls, pristine beaches and magical islands all crammed into one tiny province. You can just about see and experience all that is Southern Thailand by venturing to this magical place called krabi.

During your time here, you can walk through jungles containing giant trees festooned with lianas. Travel by boat along rivers and through teeming mangrove forests. Scuba dive the Andaman Sea; rock climb the sheer vertical cliffs of Ao Phranang and Railay beaches; visit mountain top pagodas with intricate, traditional architecture and panoramic views; discover hidden temples set amongst the surrounding limestone mountains; explore caves, waterfalls and unbelievably magical islands.

Krabi's main charms are perfect sandy, coral fringed, beaches and tropical islands, but don't forget what's on offer inland too. There are those towering cliffs and splendid waterfalls, caves, temples, mosques and, of course, the charming people….

The charming lowly rascals who would sneak into your room in the middle of the night and steal your belongings.. the sneaky b*stards who would tag-team with the in-house room cleaners to leave the sliding door of your balcony unlocked after she does the cleaning.. letting them sneak in, to share your wealth and possessions.

It was supposed to be a wonderful trip to Krabi, to watch Daniel get married to a lovely thai girl.. it was supposed to be nice and relaxing and I’m supposed to wait at home for them to come home and tell me all about it. How nice the place was.. how nice the ppl are.. how fanciful a thai wedding was.. NOT how they got mugged, how they realized that the balcony was left unlocked, how the creep sneaked in at night while they were sleeping and took the money and camera… and how my mum’s all hysterical about the issue.. My blood boils as I think of it. I pray God grant me peace..

My only consolation.. well.. my sister’s fine though it could have very well happened to her and the lowlife who took the stuff was dumb enough to leave behind SGD. He only took a hundred SGD worth of thai baht and a camera which cost 199. Dumb nut decided to leave the SGD on the floor even though it’ll prob be worth much more than he is..

So anyway, if you’re going to Krabi anytime soon.. keep a watchful eye for the sneaky things they’d do.. and if the name card of the hotel/motel/resort looks anything like the one shown below.. STAY AWAY!

And pray that if you do get mugged *CHOI*, it’ll be by someone as dumb as this fella.. Thank God nothing happened to my family.

Irritant

I'm up to my neck in work. The papers are starting this Wednesday.

Anyway, so I received an interesting comment over the weekend regarding my DEFCON posts.

Well, to whoever who wrote it (since you wouldn’t even dare leave a name), THANK YOU for your reminder, but I personally believe that what I posted was not in violation of anything.

Run a simple search on Google for ‘military symbols’ and you’d be fully educated on what you need for writing a battle procedure/briefing. You’d perhaps even be surprised to find that such codes are actually VERY universal or perhaps much to your dismay, you never knew that the internet IS a vast source of knowledge.. who am I to fault the ignorant.

But since it is such a matter of concern to you, I have decided to remove them as a gesture of MY own goodwill; I am after all, a civilian-soldier, sworn to protect my nation.

Thank you very much for your concern.. anymore comments?

Excursion Weekend

ok, so this post is waay overdue, but I meant to post it up last week. Haven’t had the time to edit it..

Anyway, before I get into that.. it’s goodie bag day again today. Exam Welfare Package they call it.. we were supposed to get one last semester too but somehow, ‘due to unforeseen circumstances’ we didn’t get any.. this sem’s one sponsored by the SDU I think.. other than the round of useful stuff like notepads, writing pads, pens, sticky pads, tape, NEWater, instant ice-tea mix and stuff.. we got some Date-O-Meter thing.. it’s one of those silly liquid crystal thermometer thing that changes colour from black to brown to green and blue when you place your thumb over it. Apparently it tells you if you’re good to go for a date or not. Haha.. how silly.. waste of tax payers’ money.

some of the stuff in the goodie bag, i think the most useful thing would be the 2 writing pads. hah..

So anyway, last Saturday was like some excursion. Beeps just got her bonus *shh..* and she needed to de-stress.. so being the nice brother that I am, I accompanied her Bishan. Had a hearty meal and got me a new pair of shoes too.. all thanks to her. =) then we met ben and he bought us bubble tea.. that was my Saturday Excursion.. didn’t need spend a single cent. =) you don’t get to do these kinda stuff often nowadays..

The bulk of Sunday was spent at the Asian Civilizations Museum with dar. It was some Red festival thing, so you just needed to wear red and you’re allowed to go in free.. so cool right? There were some really interesting exhibitions especially this new part which featured a new discovery made in china. They call it the Mystery Man from China’s Lost Age, stating that it’s some ‘most important archeological find in the 20th century China’. But well, sadly, they don’t allow any photography of the artifacts. Ok, so they actually allow it, but I’m not allowed to publish them anywhere ‘including websites’.. baah.

Alright, so much about what went on inside, on the outside it was quite spectacular too.. other than the fact that almost everything was red, they had little booths for balloon sculpting and hand-painting and also a stage. There was this guy sharing how to use the i-forgot-what-it’s-called. Some drum-like thing that the middle-eastern people use. And along with him, there was a belly dancer! How cool! That's the first time i get to watch a bellydancing act live! The whole set was quite well done, they managed to engage the audience and allowed the kids to play and beat along on the drums. Entertaining..

that's the bellydancer.. she defines the word 'vibrate'..

LEFT: They also invited those who were interested to go on stage and join in the impromptu dance. Quite cool, espcially the little boy on the extreme right..

RIGHT: dar with one of the opera people.. they had a session where they showed how they dressed and applied the make-up to the opera singers.. from scratch..

There was also a ‘bian-lian’ (literally translated as ‘face-changing’) performance too. Where the fella on stage would change his mask really quickly. I’ve seen it on tv and it’s nice to be able to watch it in person, just that well.. it wasn’t really well done. The troope that the ACM employed didn’t really do justice to the whole bian-lian performance art. Maybe they had a tight budget. I mean.. I DID go in free after all..

Oh, and i got to watch TMNT . It’s a pity they didn’t feature the theme song. Haha, otherwise it would really be nostalgic. On that note, I remember reading somewhere on the net about an article that lists quite some stuff that would be nostalgic to people of my generation (and in Singapore, since this blog is probably read by non-singaporeans too).. been looking around for quite sometime, and then, out of the blue, I got an email and it’s exactly wat I’m looking for.. enjoy the read!

Nostalgia..
To those of you born in the 1970s or 1980s, take a trip down memory lane...

You grew up watching He-man, MASK, Transformers, Silver Hawk and Mickey Mouse. Not to forget Ninja Turtles, Care bears, My Little Pony and Smurfs too...

You grew up brushing your teeth with a mug in Primary school during recess time. You will squat by a drain with all your classmates beside you, and brush your teeth with a coloured mug. The teachers said you must brush each side 10 times too.

You know what SBC stands for.

You pay 40 cents for Chocolate or Strawberry MILK every week in class.

You watch a very popular Malay dubbed Japanese drama on RTM1 about schoolgirls who possess powerful skills in volleyball called Meoro Attack.

You find your friends with pagers and handphones cool in Secondary school.

SBS buses used to be non- airconditioned. The bus seats are made of wood and the cushion is red. The big red bell gives a loud "BEEP!" when pressed...

Bus fares barely reached 50 cents.

There are colourful tickets for TIBS buses. The conductor will check for tickets by
using a machine which punches a hole in the ticket.

Envelopes were given to us to donate to Sharity Elephant every Children's Day.

You've probably read Young Generation magazine. You know who's Vinny the little vampire and Acai the constable.

You were there when they first introduced the MRT here. You went for the first ride with your parents and you would kneel on the seat to catch the scenery.

Movie tickets used to cost only $3.50. (if we did watch movies then.)

Gals are fascinated by Strawberry Short Cake and Barbie Dolls.

You learn to laugh like The Count in Sesame Street .

You longed to buy tibits called Kaka (20 cents per pack), and Ding Dang / Tora (50 cents per box), that had a toy in it and it changes every week.

Not forgetting the 15 cents animal crackers and the ring pop, where the lollipop is the
diamond on the ring.

You watched TV2 (also known as Channel 10) cartoons because Channel 5 never had enough cartoons for you.

Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, The Three Investigators, Famous Five and Secret Seven are
probably the thickest story books you ever thought you have read. Even Sweet Valley High, Malory Towers. And R.S.Stine and Goosebump series were probably the scariest story you ever read.

KFC used to be a high class restaurant that served food in plates and lets you use metal forks and knives.

Catching was the IN thing and ‘twist’ was the magic word.

Your English workbooks were made of some poor quality paper that was smooth and yellow.

There was once the craze over Tamiya cars and toy dispensers where you had to slot in a coin and twist the knob, while your other hand anticipated the toy to appear. 20 cents for colourful rubber balls and 50 cents / 1 dollar for toys in plastic egg shells.

The only computer lessons in school involved funny pixellised characters in 16 colours walking about trying to teach you maths.

Waterbottles were slung around your neck and a must everywhere you go.

Boys loved to play soccer with small plastic balls in the basketball court.

Teng-teng, five stones, chapteh, hentam bola and zero point were all the rage with the girls and boys too...

Science was fun with the balsam and the angsana being the most important plants of our lives, guppies and swordtail being the most important fish.

Who can forget Ahmad, Bala, Sumei and John, eternalized in our minds from the textbooks. Even Mr Wally & Mr. Yakki. What abt Miss Lala? And Zaki and Tini in Malay Textbooks?

We carry out experiments of our own to get yourself badges for being a Young Zoologist/Botanist etc.

Every Children's day and National day you either get coloured caps or pins or pens with 'Happy Children's Day 1993' or files with 'Happy National Day 1994'.

In Primary six you had to play buddy for the younger kids like big sister and brother.

We wear BM2000, BATA, or Pallas shoes.

Your form teacher taught you Maths, Science and English.

The worksheets were made of brown rough paper of poor quality.

You went to school in slippers and a raincoat when it rained, and you find a dry spot in the school to sit down, dry your feet, and wear your dry and warm socks and shoes.

School dismissal time was normally around 1 pm.

There would be spelling tests and mental sums to do almost everyday.

Your friends considered you lucky and rich if your parents gave you $3 or more for pocket money everyday.

You see Wee Kim Wee's face in the school hall.

You freak out when the teacher tells you to line up according to height and hold hands with the corresponding boy or girl.

Boys like to catch fighting spiders. Collecting and battling erasers was a pastime for boys.

Autograph books were loaded with "Best Wishes", "Forget Me Not", and small poems like "Birds fly high, hard to catch. Friend like you, hard to forget".

Class monitors and prefects loved to say "You talk somemore, I write your name ah!"

There were at least 40 people in one class.

Large, colourful schoolbags were carried.

You brought every single book to school, even though there was one thing called the timetable.

How nostalgic.. and oh, it’s April.. quote of the month time! Interestingly, it’s the exam month and the quote for this month is about slacking. How timely.. =)

It's April! Quote of the month.. Utter despair.. heh.
