Saddened

My comp died. It's beyond repair.. Well, technically. It powers up, but the screen won't wake. Leave it long enough and u hear windows in the background, but nothing on the screen.

The guy at the service centre said it's wear.. So it's most prob the motherboard, lcd screen, graphic card or a combination of the three. And because warranty's over, there's an additional 100 bucks if i just want him to check out exactly what's spoiled and give me a quotation. The estimated price he gave me was 500-600 bucks to fix it.

That's half the price of a new computer u can get today. Sigh..

I'm sad.

Hi i'm your ex-classmate in poly. Anyway i have the same problem for my self-assembled old pentium 4 too. My computer screen just remain blank even after start up. It happens so frequently it is like a chronic disease. Although i am not an expert but i have found a way to solve this problem. Hope this may help you.

Sensitive graphics card. It is important ensure that your graphics card is slotted perfectly into your motherboard. Especially if you had moved your cpu around or accidentally kick or bang your cpu.

Power connector. Usually it is the power supply problem. Try removing and re-insert power connectors(both) on your motherboard. This action will usually solve the problem.

If these do not help. Try replacing the power supply. Power supply, i think, is more likely to be the cause than motherboard or graphics card

you could turn it into a media server or something which does not require the use of the monitor, but considering that you could get that much out of it, it's probably better to cash it in an get a brand new laptop :)

hey gab! i could. but it's prob too troublesome. so right now it's just a really BIG paper weight. and until i find what to do with it, it'll probably stay that way.. i'm contemplating pulling the keyboard out, but haven't the time to figure how to reconnect the wire into a usb/ps2 jack. also, i now have 1gb of ram that i'm not sure what to do with. haha.. on the hind side, i probably have almost everything as 'spare parts' should i ever need them. =)

If you wanted some ideas, you can try searching 'Freenas'. Think the specs are more than sufficient to support the NAS server - you could use it to hold the music in your house, and do a whole lot of other stuff depending on the size of the hard disk and the speed of your LAN.
